University Of Texas Longhorns Football
The University Of Texas Longhorns Football team had its first season more than a century ago in 1893. The team is located in Austin, Texas. The team plays in and uses the Darrell K. Royal Memorial Stadium regularly. It plays for the Big 12 Conference, South Division, of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
The team’s mascot is Bevo, which is a Texas longhorn steer. Prior to Bevo, the University of Texas Longhorns football team had a pit bull dog for a mascot. The dog was named Piggy. Since 1916, the University has had fourteen Bevos. The first Bevo was originally tagged “Bo” but eventually came to be called Bevo. Mighty Bevo, who was previously Sunrise Studly, is the fourteenth in the line. Bevo XIV has been in service since September 2004, and was first seen during a University of Texas Longhorns football game against the University of North Texas.
The popular rivals of the University of Texas Longhorns football team are the Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas A&M Aggies. They went up against the Oklahoma Sooners during the Red River Shootout and the Texas A&M Aggies during the Lone Star Showdown.
The University of Texas Longhorns football team has won four national championships, specifically during the year 1963, successively in 1969 and 1970, and again in 2005. Some of its most notable bowl games include the BCS Bowl in 2010, where they raged against the Alabama Crimson Tide. Other games worth remembering are the Fiesta Bowl game in 2009 against Ohio State, the 2007 Holiday Bowl game against the Arizona State Sun Devils and the Alamo Bowl of the same year against the Iowa Hawkeyes, the 2006 Rose Bowl game with the USC Trojans, and the Rose Bowl game a year earlier when the Texas Longhorns faced the Michigan Wolverines.
Apart from its notable history, the University of Texas Longhorns football program has also produced a number of excellent players. A number of them have been drafted into the National Football League and have garnered their own awards. Two former Longhorns, Earl Campbell and Ricky Williams, earned Heisman Trophies in 1977 and 1998, respectively. The Heisman Trophy is considered the highest honor an individual can receive for college football.
