University Of Texas Football
The University of Texas football team was first fielded in 1893. The team, which came to be known as the Texas Longhorns, was initially managed by Albert Lefevra. The team played two games each in fall and in spring. They won all four games.
The Dallas Foot Ball Club was the first opponent of the University of Texas football team. The game, which attracted a then-record of 1,200 people in the audience, is considered the best football game in the state of Texas. The game was played at the Dallas Fairgrounds. The game ended with an 18–16 upset by the Texas club.
The intercollegiate University of Texas football team currently competes as a member of the Big 12 Conference in the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Football Bowl Subdivision. In 1963, 1969, 1970, and 2005, the University of Texas football team had won all Division I-A national championships. It also won 32 conference championships over the years.
A hundred and twenty-nine players of the University of Texas football team have been drafted to All-America football teams. Earl Campbell and Ricky Williams, former players of the Texas club, have won the Heisman Trophy, which is the highest individual honor for college football. Campbell won the award in 1977, and Williams brought home the trophy in 1998. The College Football Hall of Fame has inducted seventeen Longhorns. The National Football League Hall of Fame has included four Longhorns. A good number of the University of Texas football team players have also received distinctions for their excellent performance.
With its exemplary performance over the years, the University of Texas football program is considered as among the most impressive and tradition-rich of all time. Since 1938, at least one Longhorn has been selected in each of the previous 71 NFL Drafts. In 2008, the Texas Longhorns were ranked by ESPN as the seventh most prestigious college football team since 1936.
The University of Texas football team capped the 2010 season with an all-time record of 850–325–33, which ranks it as the second team with the most wins in football in the history of the NCAA. The University of Michigan football team holds the top spot. The Longhorns also ranked second in the number of bowl game appearances, third in bowl game wins, and eighth in number of games played. The University of Texas’s Longhorns have been ranked 64 out of 75 seasons from 1936 to 2010, and finished these seasons with top rankings.
