The University Of Texas At Austin Football team, also dubbed as the Longhorns, the Horns, or Texas, is the university’s intercollegiate football team. The Horns were first fielded in 1893. Since their first game, the Horns have had an impressive playing record and remain one of the most watched college football teams.
DeLoss Dodds is the current athletic director of the University of Texas at Austin football team. The current coaching staff is headed by William Mack Brown, who is on his thirteenth year since moving to Texas in 1998. Brown is credited with revitalizing the Longhorns. Other members of the coaching staff include Duane Akina, Major Applewhite, Bruce Chambers, Oscar Giles, Jeff Madden, Cleve Bryant, and Ken Rucker. Akina is the assistant head coach for defensive backs while Applewhite is the assistant head coach for running backs. Giles is assistant coach and in charge of defensive ends. Madden is the assistant athletic director for strength and conditioning while Bryant is associate athletic director for football operations. Chambers is the recruiting coordinator and Rucker is the director of high school relations and player development.
The University of Texas at Austin football team’s 2010 roster includes the names of 122 players. Among the team’s current players are Sam Acho, Blake Gideon, Michael Huey, Cody Johnson, Eddie Jones, James Kirkendoll, Kenny Vaccaro, Mason Walters, and Fozzy Whittaker. In a Longhorns football awards ceremony held last December 2010, Acho who plays the senior defensive end for the team was chosen by his teammates as their most valuable player for the year 2010. Acho brought home 9 out of 14 awards presented at the annual University of Texas at Austin football banquet held at the Erwin Center. Acho also won the William V. Campbell Trophy, which was awarded in New York City. The award is presented every year to the top college football athlete who also excels in academics. Apart from Acho’s impressive field plays, he is also an honors business major. Kirkendoll, who plays wide receiver for the Longhorns, and Johnson, who is a running back, shared the honor of being chosen by their teammates as most valuable offensive player. Vaccaro was awarded most valuable special teams player during the banquet.
The home stadium for the University of Texas at Austin football team is the Darrell K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium, with a current seating capacity of over 100,000. The Memorial Stadium is located in Austin, Texas, has been home to the Longhorns’ football team since it first opened in 1924. The stadium has given the Longhorns a superb home field advantage as evidenced by the Horn’s 344-95-10 home record up to the 2010 season.
The University of Texas at Austin football team is a member of the Big 12 Conference, South Division. Their mascot is Bevo, which is a Texas longhorn steer. Bevo’s burnt orange coloring is also the team’s color.
